Hi, I’m Calee!

Like Cali-fornia. Not Caylee. 🙂

I’m a designer.

Graphic design is my full-time gig. I also run a wedding invitation shop and a home-goods shop. If you’re curious about my work, check out my portfolio.

I’m a writer.

Not only have I written a bajillion words on this blog, I’ve been published elsewhere, have taken a couple stabs at writing a novel, and am currently wrapping up a design book. Once edited and polished, I’ll talk more about the design book. Novel(s) might never surface!

I’m an educator.

I have an MFA in graphic design and teach at two institutions in my spare time. I’ve taught intro-level design, technology, web design, and senior-level portfolio and capstone courses. I think learning is best when it’s a reciprocal process—I look forward to each new batch of students and wonder what they might teach me.

I’m a wannabe DJ.

When I was little I wanted to be a rock star. Hell, I still want to be a rock star.  I was actually even in a band once in 2005. But instead of being a rock star, I’m a music junkie.  In my spare time I’ve DJed at a college radio station. My show was called “Not Your Dad’s Radio Show”. You can check out my radio playlists. I’m also still fiddling around with my bass guitar, so here’s hoping I’ll be the next Kim Gordon or Kim Deal. (Here’s where you realize I’m a 90s kid).

I’m also…

…a runner.

I started this blog back in 2008 as a way to keep me motivated for marathon training. I ran my first marathon then, but also ended up with my first injury. I’ve learned to train smarter since then, and have gone on to win a 5Kbreak my half-marathon PR by 20 minutes, and, most recently, break my 10K PR.

…a maker.

I’m happiest when I am making things. I have made pretty much anything you can name. (I was doing Pinterest projects before Pinterest was a thing!) If you search the archives of this blog, you’ll find tons of art, craft, and DIY projects.

… a foodie.

I love to bake and my husband is a ridiculously good cook, so I often post about good food. Several years ago, I discovered I have a ton of food allergies. So if you’re suffering from food allergies and sensitivities, you’ll likely find something that works for you here. I share quite a few of my recipes.

… and I like to change my hair. (Often.)

I’ve had just about every haircut imaginable … although I’ve yet to have a mullet or mohawk. I’m not afraid of bleach or color. If you’re looking for inspiration for thick, curly/wavy hair, check out the backlog of hair photos.

I’m married to my best friend.

My partner-in-crime of nearly a decade, Mark, and I tied the knot on Friday the 13th of May, 2016. In Mark’s spare time he cooks fantastic creations. He doesn’t have his own show on the Food Network, but he does have a feature on life + running: Wonder-Bred Italian Boy Cooks. He’s responsible for some of this blog’s best recipes.

I’m (still) a weird dog lady.

In 2009 I adopted a long-haired miniature doxie named Mr. Barnabus Stinson, II. Barney was 10 years old when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His last day was April 5, 2017. We miss Barney so much that I made a little memorial page for him

If you want to know the history of this blog, here’s a post. 🙂
