I got word this week that I’m officially a KURE DJ. KURE 88 5 Ames Alternative is our local student-run radio station at Iowa State.
I’ve always wanted a career in radio, and even had an internship at a radio station in college, and attended a summer broadcasting camp in 2001. In fact, I even started out as a Communication Arts major with an emphasis on radio broadcasting as a freshman in college 11 years ago (whew).
However, I jumped that ship a long time ago in favor of graphic design, cuz that’s where the big bucks are (ha! so wrong I was, but hey, it is a more marketable skill than radio DJing). But I always kind of regretted that decision. I’m a good designer (some might even say great!), but my true passion lies with music. My ultimate dream job would be combining all of the things I love: design, writing, music, recruiting/fundraising, and overall good vibes — and working for public radio.
In the meantime, I decided if I ever want to work in radio that I probably should have some knowledge about what goes on in a studio. So, I took a chance and applied last week to be a DJ at KURE 88 5 Ames Alternative. I wasn’t sure if I’d be chosen, but it’s a volunteer basis, and I’ve heard some of the other shows, and I figured I’d be up to snuff.
Anywho, I created a page for my playlists, and I also opened up a new twitter account for any requests.
The music I play does need to be owned by KURE or KURE staff (which means I’m probably going to quit using Spotify premium, and start buying music again).
But, my first order of business is to introduce everybody to CHVRCHES.
I discovered them last week when my friend Steph tweeted about their new album, and she generally has incredible taste in music, so I checked them out. She did not disappoint. Here is a taste of CHVRCHES’ new album.
I don’t know what time my show will be just yet, but I can assure you that no matter what time I’m on, the show will be awesome. You can stream online as well. I’ll keep everybody updated.
I’m kind of freaked out now that I read through the station rules … worried that I’ll accidentally swear, forget to read the station ID, or something stupid. But, hey, learning process.
