Chunky Fingerless Mitts Pattern
Good morning! It’s been a while since I’ve shown you a finished project or given you a pattern/tutorial.
I recently bought some hand spun yarn from a local yarn and fiber maker, Spark Yarn.
I love the look of hand-spun yarn, but don’t usually buy hand spun because it usually comes in small batches and it limits the options for things you can make. I decided I needed a new pair of fingerless gloves, but the pattern I usually use from Knitty.com doesn’t work well with this yarn. So, instead, I decided to make up a pattern as I went along.
Here’s how they turned out!
I think they turned out quite nice. Next time I get hand spun yarn I will look for some that has less variety in weight throughout the yarn. I don’t love the uneven look but it might be for you. These mitts are extremely warm though, so I’ll take it!
Chunky Fingerless Mitts Pattern
Materials
- 4 size US 7 DPN knitting needles
- 1 ball of chunky yarn (I used Spark Yarn)
Instructions
- Instructions make 1 size small/medium. Medium/large in parentheses.
- Cast on 28 (32) stitches.
- Knit 2, purl 2 for 6 rounds.
- Switch to moss stitch: knit 1, purl 1 for 2 rounds, then purl 1, knit 1 for 2 rounds. Repeat these 4 rounds until work is at the bottom of the wearer’s thumb (between 2-3 inches).
- Bind off (loosely, and in pattern) the first 4 (6) stitches.
- Finish that round in pattern.
- Cast on 4 (6) stitches.
- Finish that round in pattern.
- Knit in moss stitch pattern for 1 more inch (or 6 rounds).
- Knit 2, purl 2 for 6 rounds.
- Bind off in pattern.
- If you would like to add a thumb, pick up and knit 12 stitches around the thumb hole.
- Knit 8-10 rounds (however long you’d like your thumb).
- Bind off loosely.
- Weave in the ends.
Have you crafted anything lately?
And have you had to bust out your winter gear yet? I got my coat out yesterday … brrrrrr. :/
Kelly @ No Sugar Sweet Life
Cute, cozy, warm. Would be a great Christmas present!! Question – how long does it take to make such mitts?

Kelly @ No Sugar Sweet LifeThese took me about an hour a piece to make. They were easy peasy.
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance
I’m the least crafty person I know. But these mittens are sooooo cute! Are you sure you don’t want to reopen your etsy store and sell some?!? 🙂
chimes
Michelle @ Eat Move BalanceActually, I’m probably going to post random things in there from time to time when I make something, but I’m not going to have it reliably stocked anymore.
janetha
will you teach me how to make a beanie in may? for real.
chimes
janethaI can try! Knit or crochet (hippy beanie or warm beanie is the question)?
Alex @ Alex Tries it Out
I wish I could knit! I was teaching myself to crochet but I was having a hard time sticking with it. And my stitches were too small so it was a huge pain. Fail!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More
Those mitts are SUPER cute!!
lindsay
not gonna lie, i am so uncrafty. I’d try this and fail. But you just might have sparked an interest.
p.s.
Just read your post from today. We are here to support!

lindsaythanks for the support.
PS Knitting is actually really, really easy when you use a chunky yarn and really big needles. Pick up Stitch n Bitch and give it a whirl.
