Sweet Tunes Thursday: (some of) My Favorite Music Videos
I got some guff for skipping my Sweet Tunes Thursday session last week (even though it’s not regular), so I’m back with a vengeance this week. I’ve got a post mulling around in my brain about my crappy taste in music as a high schooler, but that isn’t on the agenda this week. Neither is a rundown of my favorite albums of all time. The latter is going to take some thinking.
Instead, I’ve created a compilation of some of my favorite music videos. I say “some” because I know there are a bunch that I missed, and these were the ones that were top of mind.
Primus: Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver
This video was filmed with the actors moving in slow motion because the suits were so heavy. They sped it up to match the music.
Foo Fighters: Big Me
I remember seeing this video (and Everlong — it was a tossup for me actually on this one) all the time on MTV when I was a kid. And if you don’t remember Mentos commercials, I’m sorry. And I’m apparently old.
Beastie Boys: Sabatoge
Hands down one of the best videos ever made. Actual music video critics would probably agree (is that a job? If so, I want it).
Michael Jackson: Thriller
Ha. Like how I snuck this one in the middle? Like I’d do a compilation without tribute to the King of Pop (BTW his 54th birthday would have been yesterday, in case you were wondering.) Obviously Thriller was groundbreaking and exceptional, but anybody that knows anything about music could tell you that. Zombies. Michael Jackson. Zombies.
Blink 182: All The Small Things
This song came out during the height of boy-band-dom in the late ’90s. And like true punk rockers (even though they were pop punk), Blink 182 made a statement against the norm.
Lady Gaga: Telephone
I love music videos that are mini movies (thus the inclusion of MJ’s Thriller). Gaga tried this in Telephone and it’s the first video I’ve seen for a while that I think actually delivers.
Megadeth: Hangar 18
Gotta love the cheesy Megadeth mascot inclusion. Not often do you see a metal band doing a video that tells a story and isn’t just images of them thrashing guitars or headbanging (I know I’ve forgotten some in this genre, so feel free to shout it out if you think of one).
Jeremy Messersmith: Tatooine
I think this is the 4th or 5th time I’ve featured this video. Seriously. Cut paper. Star Wars. Love it!
Did you watch music videos when they were actually on TV? Which were your favorites?

Ashley @ Freckles & Spice
Love that you put all the same things on here… such a throw back.
I was a big TRL with Carson fan back in the day.
I remember enjoying The Darkness – A Thing Called Love
Anything Gwen Stefani – huge girl crush on her. If I Was a Rich Girl was fun
chimes
Ashley @ Freckles & SpiceI was a HUGE fan of Gwen too. I debated on throwing in “Cool”, but decided against it. Next round!

Ah maaaaan, MENTOS commercials!! Music videos from the ’90s are like this unwrapped package of preserved magic to me, because somehow i missed most of them. I watched MTV and VH1 but i swear all i ever saw were Puff Daddy and N’Sync videos.
Having said that, i’m still only watching that one video. You gotta dole this stuff out in small portions. 😛
Calee (@chimes)
Stephanie FI know. I watched a LOT of Beavis and Butthead and that’s where all the good videos were. 😉 Though California Love by Tupac.
1979, Tonight Tonight, The Bad Touch, Everlong … almost made the cut. I’ll do another one soon.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen
Mentos freshness.
