I forgot to mention yesterday that Mark bought a grill over the weekend.

Okay. I might have lied about the “forgetting to mention” just there. If you didn’t notice the expiration date on the yogurt from yesterday … you probably didn’t know that I pre-scheduled that post. I knew I’d be too busy to blog this week! Yesterday and today is State FFA and I’m working hard! So consider this my weekend recap.

But, we are officially grilling. I have a feeling this week’s grocery haul will have only items that go on the grill … and experimental items that we think might work on the grill. So far, steak and chicken with mushrooms and asparagus.

SO. EXCITED. And Barney approves.

We also found a use for the kohlrabi that we got from our CSA and made a curry. Thanks to my friend Steph for this recipe idea. I loved how it turned out but I could do with or without the kohlrabi. It is definitely good base curry recipe though.

And Saturday at about 9 PM my roomies and I decided to play Risk. And have some drinks. I’m apparently a very sore loser when I’ve been drinking. Needless to say we didn’t finish the game but we kept track of where everybody was so we can pick it up again this weekend.

Pre-pissed off losing.

I drank coffee with baileys to stay awake. We were up until 3 or 4 AM. Whoops!

Mark was dominating (in red) for a while. Matt and I had an alliance against him, but I may have accidentally gotten greedy and broke it. Then things got ugly.

Even the sonic screwdriver couldn’t break Mark’s stride. Which leads me to this: Risk with little Daleks for pieces. Eh?

And I believe I promised you a tutorial. So here you go!

About 2 years ago, I became completely obsessed with wonky log cabin blocks.

What’s that? It’s this. Except yours will hopefully come with straighter lines and better tension and correctly pressed seams … 

In case you didn’t know this, I am not a fan of traditional quilt blocks. I don’t think most of them go with the modern fabric patterns we have now.

Also, I don’t like to measure. Which doesn’t make for good traditional patchwork anyway. So how the hell do I make quilts? I improvise. Or use patterns that don’t require much skill with measuring and straight lines.

I came across this tutorial from Quilt Dad that shows a step-by-step way to make a wonky log cabin quilt block.

And then made a LOT of them (seriously, click through this flickr gallery) … some might say I was obsessed.

It’s 2012. And I’m starting to turn these blocks into actual quilts. Here’s my latest quilt top. I’m going to add a 4-5″ border of light pink around the edge and I’ve got 3 more blocks that I’m going to use on the back. And I’m planning to use the same light pink that I use for the border as the main backing fabric.

I’m hoping that when I get it quilted I can have an all-over pattern that matches the light pink pattern on the outside level of the wonky blocks (the one with the squids).

… I was on vacation in Chicago last week … but I managed to sweatshop some lovely camera/iPod/electronic cozies. They’re not quite finished, but here they are in the  making.

I decided that before I went to Chicago and to The Needle Shop (the highlight of my trip of course) that I had to work through the scraps I acquired last time I was there. So, enter, easy peasy camera/iPod cozies.

Of course, these will have button closures, but this is how far I’ve gotten for now, so I thought I’d share!

I’ve been working through my fabric scraps and I came across the Heather Ross Mendocino scraps that Adria had given me a while back.  She had leftovers after making a really cool mendocino quilt.

Here are a few of my favorite ones … They’re 5″x6″

I’m going to add 5-6″ of white fabric around each block to make it look like they’re floating and make a larger quilt out of these.  So excited!
