Survey Says … Run!

Early last fall the “sunshine award” was going around the blogiverse. I’d been tagged in various posts, but I missed one (or more?) since I wasn’t really reading blogs at the time that everybody was posting it. The idea was you tag 10 people and ask 10 questions. Kind of like the 21st century version of a chain letter, but more fun than that. I responded to some of the questions here. Last week I was trying to find all my guest posts so I could include them on my CV for a class that I’m in — and because it’s smart to keep that sucker up to date — and I realized I never noticed that Janetha had tagged me, but then I saw the questions I had answered were actually HER questions because another gal used the same ones.

Anywho, this whole thing got me interested in doing a survey, and I’ve had this survey by Olive to Run on my list of fun surveys to complete for a while. She’s done quite a few surveys, and I never get around to completing them for her linkups, but I want to answer all her questions at some point, so here goes round one!

Would You Rather? a running survey by Olive to Run // graphic by

1. Would you rather run a 5k or a marathon?
5K for now since that’s about all I’m capable of while I’m still workshopping some injuries. Truth be told, my absolute favorite distance is a half marathon because my peak average pace is competitive at that distance, and 13.1 miles is enough to feel really frickin’ accomplished for a while.

2. Would you rather run in the heat of summer or the icy winter?
I used to love running in both hot hot heat and freezing cold, but give me the freezing cold. I think it’s more due to the fact that I’m uncomfortable taking off my shirt in public now and I know I can’t run if I’m overheated. I’d rather pile on the clothes and run in a snowstorm.

3. Would you rather have new running shoes or a new running outfit?
Running shoes for sure. I don’t need to look cute while I run, I just need to have appropriate footwear because it will eff me up if I don’t. Why, you buying?

4. Would you rather run alone or in a group?
Alone. I’m a lone wolf in just about every aspect of my life, and running is my time to be alone since usually nobody wants to do that with me. I’ll take a running buddy from time to time, but that’s about all I can handle.

5. Would you rather run next to someone in a race who tries to talk to you constantly or someone who breathes heavy and grunts?
The only thing I hate more than talkers is the people who try to pace with you. Unless I know you, or look like I am really struggling during a half or longer distance race — don’t talk to me. I’ll take the grunter. At least it’s not rude to turn up my headphones and ignore the grunter.

6. Would you rather run a race because of the convenience (location, price, travel) or the swag?
I’ve never been one to run a race (or do anything, for that matter) for “swag”. I can run a distance on my own, so really, what’s the point of a race? They should be fun, or maybe helpful in setting a pace or distance goal. I like to keep my races very local and cheap. For me, local is a deal breaker because I can’t sit immediately after running because of my IT bands. Plus, that extra money I saved can go for a post-race massage.

7. Would you rather run a race with a group of friends or by yourself?
It depends on my goal for the race. Since currently I’m not running for PRs, I would rather run with a group of friends. When I’m running for PRs I would rather race alone.

8. Would you rather run a PR but result in an injury or finish strong and missing a PR?
23-year-old me would say get the PR, but 29-year-old me knows better because 23-year-old me jacked me up pretty hard and I’m still paying for it. If you’re a runner and reading this, heed my warning: skip the PR and take your health!

9. Would you rather eat a big meal the night before or a big meal after a race?
Neither. I can’t do the big meal the night before the race because my GI system would go haywire. I’ve found it’s best to go bland and normal the day before and day of the race. I don’t typically do a big meal after a race either because I don’t play the “welllll I burned a lot of calories” game, and if I ran a PR-worthy race, I’m going to feel like crap afterwards so food won’t sound fantastic.

10. Would you rather be chased by a swarm of bees or a pack of dogs?
OMG give me the bees … unless I’m being chased by a pack of teacup yorkies or something that wouldn’t really hurt me if they got me. I’ve been chased by so many dogs, and it is very scary to be chased by even ONE dog, no matter its size. I’ve been chased by a dog that’s twice my size, and that was probably the scariest thing ever. I love dogs, and most of the ones that chased me weren’t vicious, but when a dog can knock you over and you’ve worked your butt off to get heal injuries, dogs are very, very scary. So, BEES.

Do you run? If so, would you rather (pick a question to answer)?

  1. Thanks for joining in on the fun! I am the same as you- bland the day before and I too have a limited appetite after a race, it usually hits me the day after. 🙂

Ha! yay for our GI systems, I guess.

  2. Ahh didn’t see this new one!! I love the questions and your answers! I think I am with you on getting chased by bees…dogs are super scary even if they are little. Probably because I’ve heard stories and/or seen scars from dog bites. This makes me want to go for a run with you!! <3

  3. […] already done one of Cori’s Would You Rather Running Questions, but I saw this one on Calee’s blog a couple of months few months ago and knew I wanted to answer these questions at some […]
