I’m working on a poster for my graphic design history class. My prof is cool and told us we could take the test OR design a poster about an awkward dating situation with influences from designers we’ve learned about. Obviously, I chose the poster. Except I think I’ve spent as much time on this poster as I would have spent studying … but at least I get something to show for it besides a grade.

I was looking at Seymour Chwast and Wes Wilson for inspiration. I pulled a little Chip Kidd in there with a visual pun (that’s pretty secondary, so if you don’t see it, that’s okay). And I pulled some color inspiration from a bunch of designers (Tadanori Yokoo, Chwast, Wilson, Stefan Sagemeister, etc.).

I’m using Chwast’s shaky outline around the type to give more of an awkward feeling. I decided to go psychadellic with the type because I’m pretty sure I was drunk when this happened, and because sleeping lends itself to acid type (of course). I am keeping the “except my girlfriend” in a prim and proper script (not sure on placement or font yet). Tried it in my handwriting and it didn’t contrast enough.

But I need your help with picking a color scheme, since I can only print one. I have a few favorites. But I haven’t decided. I like the ones that make the whole text part look naked. But I also like color combos that elicit a gross or awkward feeling.

My favorites are the color on color (pink on pink or orange on orange). I’m probably going to print those regardless of what I turn in.

I need some opinions. So even if you’ve never commented before and you don’t have any graphic design experience, please let me know which (if any) you like, and why (if you know why). I’m not re-doing the hand-done type part, but am open to changing the layout (maybe it’s vertical, I don’t know. again, opinions needed).

THANKS.

Also, there are a lot of options. I pared it down from the original 50 options to a few that I think are contenders.

I wasn’t going to blog about this poster until it was finished because I wanted a “wow” factor, but I’ve spent all weekend on this (7-8 hours on the lettering alone), so I need help. :)

  1. I like #1 the best. I like the colors and that “naked” is in a nude shade. What does the nakes sleeper think? ;)

  2. [...] to everybody for all the feedback on Sunday’s post. I needed help, and you all steered me in a different direction — a better direction. I believe I [...]

  3. This is probably too late, but #10 + #15 because I like the colors, but I honestly didn’t notice it was supposed to look like hairy skin unless the color was more of a Crayola skin tone. :)
