If you didn’t catch my musical reference, here’s a video of The Cure‘s “Friday I’m in Love”.

Remember the time that I TOTALLY BORKED MY KNEE? Turns out it wasn’t that borked after all.

[ insert biggest sigh of relief ever. ]

My physical therapist did some tests on my knee during my first appointment / assessment yesterday, and it turns out that it’s NOT an MCL tear (which was my misnomer to begin with), OR a medial cartilage tear. I just re-aggravated the old IT band injury (which is on the other side that the pain was on … weird) and knocked my knee joint a bit loose.

I feel pretty shitty because this knee kept me from work for nearly 3 days, and from working out damn near 7 days (which is OK). But dammit, it hurt.

It turns out that my form for a lot of exercises was incorrect — my knees tend to want to roll inward on everything from squats and lunges to just plain walking or sitting at my desk. Knees rolling slightly inward isn’t something I typically look for when looking at form, but I guess now I’ll be looking extra hard.

I’ll be going to physical therapy 2-3x a week for the next several weeks to build up the muscles that make up my knee joint — in both knees — and workshop my IT band a bit more. I will be more than ready to run that marathon in October once I start training.

As far as exercise goes, I’m cutting out jump work (sad wave goodbye to TRX) I think I’ll start working through LiveFit again — and focus on form — as well as do some walking on an incline on a treadmill (while watching 90210, or some other trashy teen show), and do some light cycling until I get the go-ahead to run again.

ALSO — honorable mention for the day: I’m going to Book of Mormon tonight! I can’t wait. I bought tickets as a gift for Mark for our 3-year anniversary last October.

  1. Bummer about your IT band but happy to hear it wasn’t as bad as you may have originally thought. That’s kind of good news. Take care of yourself, lady!

    And enjoy the show!

  2. bah! praying for you!!!

  3. Yay that it’s not as bad as you thought!!! And it sounds like there are some muscle imbalances, very similar to what I had, that you’ll be able to work on with the PT in the process. A lot of it revolves around strengthening your gluteus medius. And who doesn’t love having a firmer butt, right?!? :)

Oh man, I seriously need a firmer butt. The gluteus medius (which is exactly what they told me I need to work on, actually) is right where all the cottage cheese parts of my butt are (yes, even little people get cottage cheese butt). I was wondering why I couldn’t get rid of that even when I was lifting heavy and the rest of it had gone away. now I know why.

      • Oh, it’s definitely a stubborn spot. And I couldn’t believe how weak it was on me . . . . and caused so many other issues as a result: IT Band, achy knees, and hip flexor tightness. What a mess! But it did get better with the exercises that target the glute med. :)

I seriously wish that the PT that I had before had mentioned a specific muscle area because she didn’t. She just gave me exercises. I have had issues with these same areas for the last 5 years. I even have a standing desk at work because if I sit for too long my IT band gets pissy. It’s better since I did a round of LiveFit, but seriously. I’m googling more exercises for when I’m released to my own resources.

  4. That’s great it wasn’t a tear! Still sucks though. When you do squats and the like, turn your toes just slightly outward to take some pressure off your knees and keep them in line. Mine have been SO much better since my trainer started me on that.

BRILLIANT. I’ve been trying to do that. I’m being forced to do all my strength training sans-weights (well, lower-body anyway). I can’t believe how much of a burn I’m getting. I really must not have been doing things right.

  5. True story: the radio station we listened to in the car on the way to school every morning growing up played that song every Friday, so still, to this day, I tend to hear it in my head as I’m driving to school.

(I realize it looks like I’m ignoring everything else in the post, but I really just wanted to share that fact with someone.)
