#MotivationMonday [3]: Turn your can’ts into cans.

(Trigger Warning: this post could be triggering to those who have had experience with eating disorders.)

I like cans. How about you? They’re so much nicer than can’ts.

Operation pants fit was born partially out of my desire to lose a little weight, but mostly out of my need to get a little uncomfortable, and actually do all these great things that I wish and dream of doing.

What are my dreams and wishes? Here are a few, with the “can’ts” included.

  • Get my MFA in graphic design — but I can’t afford it, and it will take too long.
  • Run another marathon — but I can’t find the time to train / my body can’t take it.
  • Fit into my freaking pants — but I can’t lose weight.
These are simple things. And the can’ts are so easy to remove in all cases. See?
  • I can afford get my MFA in graphic design in a reasonable amount of with tuition reimbursement from my job, by using my savings, and by taking out a very modest amount of student loans.
  • I can run another marathon if I train properly, continue chiropractic care, and eat appropriately.
  • I can lose the small amount of weight / tone up to fit into my pants by giving 100% instead of the 80% I’ve been giving lately.
The lesson here? If you want something bad enough, you will find a way to get it. I’ve figured this out over the course of the past few weeks.

I’m hoping by the end of #operationpantsfit I’ll have moved past all my negative energy and know that I can do anything I set my mind to. I ran a frickin’ marathon once. Why am I blocking myself from doing these other things?

However, regardless of my progress on my wishes and plans, I am happy in the moment I’m in NOW. My friend Lindsay (from Cotter Crunch / creator of Healthy Bites) had a great post about this last week, so if you have a second, check it out.

  1. i think i’m mastering the operation fit my pants. up 2 sizes now! hehe. and i am proud of you, honored to know you, and support your happiness now! you CAN and will make all these thing happen.

  2. I think the reminder here is that we so often STAND IN OUR OWN WAY! Sometimes it’s absolutely crazy and I really have to remind myself that I can do anything I set my mind to if I really want it and that nothing and no one else can get in my way.

  3. I love this idea! So much more positive to think of what you can do, versus what you can’t. There’s no time like the present to go for your dreams, right?

YES! I love this. It takes a lot of courage (and effort) to stop making excuses and say HELL YES I CAN. I’m so pumped that you’re going back to school. You’re gonna rock that MFA. 🙂

  5. heck yes! you can do anything you want!

  6. let me just say thank you for not saying “CAN’S”–it is more when i see dos and don’ts lists.. but it applies here, too.

    1. lol I love you.

It applies everywhere that things are plural and not possessive … and I want to bang my head on the wall when I see it done wrong too.

last I checked “can” doesn’t own anything. I am more than happy to have you point out any stupid grammatical errors I make. I know better. I’m just, sadly, very lazy.

    2. PS I feel like I should add you to our “English Enthusiasm” pinboard on Pinterest. 🙂

I don’t have an actual update post to link up, but I daresay that I’m doing great. I have been pushing myself to stick to my healthy diet and running goals.

It’s only been just under 3 weeks for me so far, though. I’m giving myself the full 4 weeks before stepping back on the scale and trying on the dreaded pants!

  8. Not believing you can do something (or being scared of it) is definitely the biggest barrier to interfere with getting what you REALLY want. I overcame my “can’t” of quitting my horrible old job to get my dream job- and that was a big freaking deal.
My biggest goal in life now? Honestly, to be content and comfortable in my skin. It will happen. Soon.
