Sweet Tunes Thursday: 10 Favorite Albums #8 — Michael Jackson Dangerous

I bet you guys were wondering how far down in the list we’d get before I got to Michael Jackson. Not far.

For those of you who are new readers, or don’t understand how much of an oddball I am, I have an entire category under “rock” dedicated to MJ. When I was a little kid, I taped EVERYTHING MJ off of MTV and VH1, and would watch the tapes over and over again. I was picked on to no end by my classmates (kids are mean). So, I became a closet MJ fan, and stayed that way for years. Somewhere along the lines in college I decided that I didn’t care anymore and came out of the closet. With a vengeance.

I didn’t want to include one artist more than once on this list. Scratch that. After listening to his entire catalogue, I’ve got another one coming up later.

It took me a while to decide which of his albums was my favorite because they all have their merits. Bad has “Smooth Criminal” which has one of my favorite dance sequences, and that album is the soundtrack to “Moonwalker”. Thriller has a ridiculous amount of number one hits, including “Billie Jean“, “Beat it“, and of course, “Thriller“. And Dangerous?

Dangerous is one of my favorite Michael Jackson albums. Mostly because I have some good memories associated with it:

  1. Owning the single (on cassette) of “Black or White” when I was a kid, and having impromptu singing and dancing parties with my sister. The B-side had an instrumental version that we would sing to because we were totally going to enter in the county fair’s talent show.
  2. Having impromptu jam sessions with my friends Nikki and Steph with that same cassette tape.
  3. Maybe most importantly, I remember buying the CD version of this album (finally) the summer that Michael Jackson died, at the same time College Boyfriend and I broke up. It was so liberating to blast MJ with the windows rolled down and hear others doing the same. Never could I have done that around College Boyfriend (for the record, Mark will let me do that … sucker).

Of course there are epic videos and dance routines associated with this album. My favorite video is for “Remember the Time”.

However, this album gave birth to what I consider one of the creepiest MJ moments: This video for “Keep it in the Closet”. It was released during a time where MJ’s sexuality was under scrutiny, and I’m sure that’s how this song and video came about. I remember catching a glimpse of this on TV before my mom shut it off. I think it even premiered late at night because it was so racy.

How awkward. Still, it’s a good song.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Have you ever busted out dancing to it in the middle of the gym, the mall, or at work? (I know I have)

I’m listening to Bad right now!! Love.

  2. Not sure that I have any *guilty* music pleasures since I don’t really care. 🙂 But I guess I have some that others like to make fun of depending who’s around. I was a choir geek in high school, so classical or a cappella or similar will get me some looks when I blast it from the car.

I had some friends in college that would try and make fun of my extensive Jimmy Buffett collection. They’d change their tune after I’d throw a surprise Buffett party on the dreariest day of the year, which was always in February in northern Ohio in a house with the thermostat set as high as it would go, Hawaiian shirts, sandals, heavy drinking starting at 9AM… the works.

    Ahhh, good times.

haha I’m with you — I just don’t care. But i’d classify things that friends make fun of as “guilty pleasures”.

I was a choir geek too! And a band geek.

Love the Jimmy Buffet party idea.

      1. Buffett parties make February bearable. I highly recommend you hold one impromptu on the day you least want to get out of bed. Even better when you have a few good friends with a heads up they might get “the call” at a moment’s notice and to have a Sick day ready.

        1. lol you are the best. PS you and the wifey need to become my facebook friends so we can have more regular chats.

Yup, this is why we were destined to be friends. I WAS OBSESSED with Dangerous. In what … 3rd grade? Insane! I would line up all my barbies and what not and rock out, singing at the top of my lungs. Amazing album. I still love it.

… this should also be said for Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation album. RE-DIC

  4. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not not much of an MJ fan [at all]. I will also be the first to admit that I had Dangerous on cassette and practically wore it out when I was a kid. Gone Too Soon was my favorite.

  5. can’t say MJ is my favorite but i can appreciate what he did for music. guilty pleasure: BSB radio on pandora 🙂 i like to listen to it when i’m running (…or picking alex up from work haha!) because i know all the words.

  6. I love to dance, I’ll dance anywhere. My favorite place to dance is at an annual Lions Tail Gate Party I go to every year. It’s so much fun, nothing like outdoor day time dancing.
