rockin’ 4-year blog birthday bash extravaganza

This week marks the 4th year of this blog. Well, the anniversary of my blog, which has morphed a little bit throughout the last four years.

To celebrate, I bring you chimes’s rockin’ 4-year blog birthday bash extravaganza.

Fun posts? Check.

Giveaways? Check.

Kickass graphic of me as Courtney Love with a bass guitar (resurfacing from 2008)? Check, check, and check it out:

Why did I start this blog?

I started blogging to log my progress for marathon training in 2008. I was obsessed with running. I could not get enough of it. My original blog lived at runningchimes.wordpress.com. I even had a @runningchimes twitter account that tweeted my latest run results.

You’ll notice my blog’s original slogan is the exact opposite of the current tagline. You’ll also notice that I was a little bit emo in 2008.

When did I change to “chimesblog”?

I was left with an overuse injury after running my marathon in 2008. So in early 2009, I bit the bullet and went in for physical therapy, which resulted in a long break from running. I was pretty depressed about it and since I’m not one to sit on my ass all day, I picked up crafting to fill the time that used to be filled with running.

Since I started crafting, most of my posts became craft related. I also had more time and money to go to concerts, so I started blogging about music more often.

Since my blog quit being about running, and I was kind of all over the place, I created this short-lived header. It was a passive-aggressive stab at being annoyed that I couldn’t run anymore.

Eventually I migrated my blog from wordpress.com to the self-hosted site (where it lives today). Along with that migration came a new header, to match the header on my portfolio site.

Why the change in focus?

Since I quit running frequently and have been basically blogging about my hobbies, I didn’t really have a focus. I do everything. I blog for me, but I do like engaging in conversations with readers, so I wanted to draw in a few more readers. In March I decided to embrace my “jack-of-all-trades” personality, so I categorized all my posts and came up with a buzzword for each category. I’m trying to mix up the type of posts that I do (crafts, music, food, fitness) so that it’s not all one thing one month, and something else another month (how it was in the past).

I also realized that though I don’t run as much as I used to, it’s still a part of my life. In fact, fitness and health is a big part of my life. So I dug back into my blog’s roots and brought back the original tagline — with a twist. Instead of running being my life’s focus, it’s just a part of it, but the title makes it clear that I’m into healthy living (mentally and physically).

So that’s it!

  1. It’s neat to read about how your blog (and you) has changed over time. I’ve been reading healthy living blogs for years–3 or 4. I just started my own blog in May, after I decided to pursue certification as a health coach. So far, I love it! More than I thought I would–it has provided a creative outlet for me that I never really knew I was missing.

Agreed! I love blogging. It keeps me accountable and it’s a great way to keep track of recipes and tutorials that I’d forget about if I didn’t jot them down somewhere. 🙂

  2. I love seeing how blogs have evolved. This was a really fun post. Happy 4 year!!

I have been blogging since 2006, but on many different places(some i can’t even remember). I have been at Miles in Murray since 2011. I don’t plan on changing that anytime soon.

I think I’m the only person I know that didn’t do the whole “livejournal” thing in 2002-2006ish. I didn’t think blogging was something I would ever like to do until I started this one.

  3. i can’t believe i’ve missed the pat 3 years of your blog. Sad. But lets celebrate with 4 more, yes? CHeers to giveaways!

You didn’t miss much. 😉 The first year was mostly “I ran this far and it took me this long and I’m amazed I didn’t poop my pants today!”

  4. Congrats! Four years? Wow. I thought a second blogday was a big deal. I hope I make it two more…

LOVE to see the progression and learn a little bit more about you. I love how blogs evolve…mine certainly has. 🙂

it would be an epic waste of time.

  5. i love your blog! (and this little background story!) happy birthday!!

thanks!!! 🙂 I love YOUR blog too. Side note, goal for next year: migrate files to lifeplusrunning.com and revamp my portfolio so I can update it without re-writing all the html files.

  6. It’s so neat to see how blogs change over time…I know mine is COMPLETELY different from what it was…or more importantly, what it LOOKED like (bad…very bad pictures) back when I started in 2010. Yep, I’ll be celebrating my second year in blogging in the next couple of months. I really hope to have a kick ass shindig this year to celebrate because it’s SO much more than just blogging…I’ve grown and changed SO much in this past year, it’s incredible…I really think Blend had a big part in all that!

Happy bloggy birthday! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the week! 😀

  7. happy blog birthday!! 🙂

  8. Happy 4th, gorgeous girl!!! I love hearing the story of your evolution, and can’t wait to see what you conquer next. 🙂

  9. Can I say that I really like that second, short-lived blog header? Fun colors! And I can’t believe you’ve been blogging for 4 years!

thanks! I love those colors too. I used to be big into the whole dotty pixelated thing in college. I strayed away from anything super fancy this time because trendy stuff tends to get dated pretty easily and I didn’t want to have to update again for a while. Though, I’m thinking of updating my links to a darker pink (almost purple) so the blog isn’t screaming pink.
